Historical information

James Alexander McLean was born on 7th August 1818 at Mayne, County Westmeath near Packenham, Ireland. He was a carpenter by trade. He sailed for South Australia on 31st March 1840, arriving 6th July 1840. He joined the South Australian Mounted Police on 29th August 1840 and resigned 31st January 1846. He then became Sheriff of the Supreme Court of S.A. and Messenger of the Insolvency Court on 22nd March 1846. He resigned 24th May 1849. He joined the Customs Department 1st June 1849 as a Tide Waiter (one who stays on board until the ship sails), resigning 2nd March 1852 and went to the Victorian gold diggings. In March 1852 he joined the Gold Mounted Police and became foreman carpenter and superintendent of barracks and stable accommodation for the district of Carlsruhe, Vic. He resigned on 25th March 1854 and returned to Port Adelaide. He married Jane Solly in Adelaide on 5th February 1850 and was the father of six children. He died in June 1869.
